Born in Dallas, my first name is a natural fit. Coincidentally, or perhaps not, I’ve loved the Dallas Cowboys since I remember inhaling my first breath. And sports in general have always been one of my biggest passions. So, becoming a sports writer for the Maryland Independent in December 1998 was also a natural fit, as I was just seven months removed from graduating from Evangel University in Missouri. I now write for the Independent, The Enterprise and The Calvert Recorder. My major beat for almost half of each year is the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. I’ve written about the team since its inception in 2008. Throughout the years, my desire is to provide readers with much more than just some statistics and details surrounding a game score or a clichéd comment from an athlete or coach. I enjoy digging deep into my game stories and sports features. Interviewing is my favorite aspect of the job, and I’ve had the opportunity to go one-on-one with such household names as Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Darrell Green, Brooks Robinson, Joe Paterno, John Thompson, Gary Williams, Jim Tressel and Tom Arnold while writing for Southern Maryland Newspapers and other magazines for which I’ve freelanced. I also enjoy covering major events and breaking news outside the world of sports, whether it’s telling the story of a 9/11 widow and her daughter less than a week after the Sept. 11 Pentagon attack or reporting on several personal accounts of those who lost their homes but survived the destructive tornado in 2002 that hit La Plata, where I lived since 1989. I graduated from La Plata High School in 1994. When I’m not in journalist mode, I love being a family man to my wife, Megan, of eight years and daughters Riley, 4, and Carson, nine months. I’m also very active in my church as the youth director. In my spare time, I love watching and playing sports, and working out regularly.
