The Montgomery County Police Department has more than 1,133 patrol officers, most of whom work out of six district police stations and numerous substations in the more populous regions of the county. The department is led by Chief J. Thomas Manger.

As of May 2012, headquarters operations for the county’s police, fire and emergency management departments began relocating to the Montgomery County Public Safety Headquarters in Gaithersburg.
Operations for the police department’s Rockville district also were relocated to the new county public safety headquarters.
