A La Plata man died Tuesday evening when his motorcycle was hit in White Plains by a car whose driver failed to yield right of way while attempting a U-turn onto southbound U.S. 301, police reported.
Philip Lyle Woodford Jr., 52, was riding his red 2009 Honda Shadow south on U.S. 301 when he was hit at 7:52 p.m. by a silver 2011 Chevrolet Impala being driven by Stephanie Ann Orbits, 39, of Pomfret, according to a report from the Maryland State Police La Plata barrack.
Woodford was pronounced dead on the scene. His body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.
Orbits, who was not injured in the crash, had been driving north on U.S. 301 and was trying to make a U-turn at the highway's intersection with Demarr Road. She hit Woodford after failing to yield him right of way, the report states.
Charges against Orbits are pending, said Lt. Charles Parlett, commander of the La Plata barrack.
