Fire destroys La Plata home
A La Plata woman has been displaced after a discarded cigarette ignited the contents of a trash can on the porch of her two-story home on Farm Drive on Oct. 4, causing $150,000 in damage, the state fire marshal reported.
The blaze occurred about 4:15 p.m. and took 40 firefighters from volunteer departments in Bel Alton, La Plata, Mechanicsville, Hughesville, Waldorf, Bryans Road and Newburg 20 minutes to bring under control.
The lone occupant of her home, the woman discovered the accidental fire.
She is being helped by family. The home had working smoke alarms.
Woman charged in copper theft
Police arrested a Dunkirk woman after pulling her over and allegedly finding her purse full of copper adapters and couplings that had been reported stolen from the Lowe’s hardware store at 2525 Crain Highway in Waldorf on Oct. 5.
Officers responded to the store at 12:30 p.m. and learned the suspect had fled in a gray Dodge pickup truck.
Officer J. Morales saw the truck on Lake Drive and pulled over its driver, Colleen Marie Arnold, 27.
Morales also found heroin and drug paraphernalia inside the truck, police reported.
Arnold was charged with theft and drug possession.
Waldorf man gets gun charge
A Waldorf man was arrested and charged with possession of a handgun after he was seen dropping it on the ground near the scene where gunshots were reported, police said.
Police responded at 10 p.m. Oct. 4 to the 3000 block of Heathcote Road in Waldorf for the report and saw two people quickly hide behind a fence.
As the officers approached, they saw one of the men place something on the ground, police reported.
The officers found a loaded handgun and arrested Kameron Shaquille Marable, 20.
Officers W. Saunders made the arrest.
Car handle broken in Charlotte Hall
Someone broke off the door handle of a vehicle parked in the 15000 block of Oaks Road in Charlotte Hall between 8:30 a.m. and 12:55 p.m. Oct. 5.
Officer L. Sershen is investigating.
