A boat crew from the Potomac Heights Volunteer Fire Department in Indian Head rescued an unidentified man Saturday morning after his boat capsized in the Potomac River.

The U.S. Coast Guard reported receiving a call from an emergency dispatcher in Prince William County, Va., at 9:45 a.m. about the man, who had been on an 18-foot fishing boat when it capsized near Quantico, Va.

The Coast Guard launched a 25-foot response boat from a Washington, D.C., station. The Potomac Heights station, Nanjemoy Volunteer Fire Department and TowBoatUS also sent rescue boats in search of the man, Charles County EMS spokeswoman Elizabeth Campbell said.

The Potomac Heights boat, a 22-foot 1999 Boston Whaler Guardian, reached the man first and brought him to shore, where emergency medical personnel were waiting, station volunteer Robert Cappel said.

"The positive outcome in this case is directly attributable to effective inter-agency communications," Coast Guard Sector Baltimore search and rescue coordinator Brad Stickles said in a news release.
