A Charles County grand jury has indicted a Virginia man already charged with raping a young girl throughout the 1970s on additional counts of rape, child abuse and sex offense.
Charles Edward Holmes, 57, of Accomac, Va., was indicted June 17 on three counts of rape, child abuse and having carnal knowledge of a child younger than 14 stemming from alleged assaults on a girl beginning in 1974 and lasting until 1978, during which time the girl was between the ages of 4 and 8, according to court records.
The victim, now 41, met with a Charles County detective May 9 to report Holmes, who was between 20 and 24 and living with the victim's mother in La Plata when the alleged abuse occurred, court documents state.
At least once a week for four years, Holmes would awaken the girl late at night and rape her, according to charging documents.
The victim called Holmes on May 27 from the Charles County criminal investigations office with the detective present. She told Holmes that she remembered the abuse and has struggled with the memories, unable to erase them from her mind, court records state.
A moment later, Holmes replied, "Neither can I," before admitting to and apologizing for the abuse, according to the documents.
Holmes was indicted again Nov. 4 on 21 additional charges stemming from the assaults.
A trial date for the June 17 indictment is listed in online court records as Nov. 29.
