Many couples have a special song; few of them have songs written specifically for them.

Sunderland couple Fred and Joan Voss have been in the latter category since their 50th wedding anniversary six years ago and now they can say “their song” is an award winner.

Fred Voss explained that for his and his wife’s golden anniversary their son Kevin contacted his friend Brenda Best, a singer and songwriter in Nashville, and asked her to write a song for his parents.

The song, “Golden Years” was given to the couple on a CD as their 50th wedding anniversary present from Kevin.

“It was a very, very nice song,” Fred Voss said. “What we’re most surprised about is that our son thought to do this in the first place.”

Six years later, just before the couple celebrated their anniversary on Jan. 28 of this year, Fred and Joan Voss learned the song was named as an American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Award-Winning Song in 2011.

A press release from Ray Gillispie, Best’s manager, said the award means the song will also be “getting airplay across the globe on some country radio stations.”

Fred Voss described “Golden Years” as being “about your life together and the fact that we have seven children.”

“She’s very well known in Nashville and I was very pleased to know that,” Fred Voss said of Best and her song winning the award.

While he said it had been a while since he played the song, after hearing the recent good news “we probably will be [playing it] again.”
