Lucy Wharton Detig, 60, Waldorf
Lucy Wharton Detig, 60, of Waldorf died of metastatic breast cancer Feb. 18, 2012, at home under hospice care.
Born April 7, 1951, in Williamsport, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Robert Wharton and the late Marie Wharton.
Mrs. Detig attended Pennsylvania State University after high school. Following her marriage in 1973, she lived in New Jersey and Texas prior to settling in Waldorf in 1981. She worked with the Charles County Public Schools for 28 years, beginning as a volunteer in her children’s classrooms in 1982. She joined the Charles County Adult Education Program in 1987 where she most recently spent 11 years as an adult education instructional specialist at the Lifelong Learning Center. Her favorite hobbies were spending time at the beach, reading and fostering kittens, a total of 101, for the Humane Society of Charles County. She loved dogs and cats and will be remembered for her strength, positive energy and compassion.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond F. Detig of Waldorf; children, Lisa M. Detig of San Diego and Justin W. Detig of York, Pa.; and sister, Letty W. Gray and her husband, Richard A. Gray of Montoursville, Pa.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 25 at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church, Waldorf. The Rev. Eamon Dignan will officiate. A life celebration will follow immediately afterward. A private burial will take place at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf.
