An accident involving a fire truck has temporarily shut down a portion of Washington Avenue in La Plata.

At around 3 p.m. Monday afternoon, rescue personnel responded to Washington Avenue near Heritage Green Parkway in La Plata for an accident involving a sport-utility vehicle and a fire engine.

According to Matt Gilroy, fire chief for the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department, Engine 12 was en route to an accident on Mitchell Road when it was involved in a crash with a white Ford Explorer.

Diane Richardson, spokeswoman for the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, said Washington Avenue at Heritage Green was shut down due to the accident.

Gilroy said two passengers in the Explorer were transported to Civista Medical Center with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Four firefighters also were transported to Civista as a precaution, he said.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.
