The Calvert County Board of Education approved the building of a new Northern High School at its meeting Thursday, confirmed board of education President Rose Crunkleton.

This decision was made after the school system held a feasibility study on the current facility, which was built in 1972.

Calvert County Public Schools Director of School Construction George Leah, who could not be reached for comment by time of press, recently said the new facility would cost about $58 million.

Leah told the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners that the planning of the project would likely begin in fiscal 2013 and the construction would start in fiscal 2015.

Calvert County Board of County Commissioners’ President Gerald W. “Jerry” Clark (R) said after touring the current facility on Feb. 14 that the commissioners would be discussing the project further at a budget session that was held yesterday.

Northern High School Principal Sylvia Lawson said she was pleased with the board of education’s decision.

“I am very happy and appreciative on behalf of everyone in the Northern community,” said Lawson, continuing she was especially looking forward to new technology, facility enhancements and “student-friendly access points and parking.”
