A 53-year-old man was taken into custody and to a hospital for an evaluation at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, St. Mary's law officers report, after a seven-hour standoff in Hollywood that included gunfire and shut down public access to a stretch of Route 235 and a parallel county road.
St. Mary's sheriff's deputies report that they went to a Mervell Dean Road residence at 3 a.m. that day on a call that the man had a firearm and was threatening to harm himself. The man fired several shots after law officers found him in a two-story shed on the property, the sheriff's office reports, and nearby residents were advised to stay in their homes during ensuing negotiations that ended with the man's surrender. No injuries were reported from the incident.
