GLENELG – Calvert will get a chance to defend its Class 2A state championship after it downed host Glenelg in the Class 2A South Region championship game on Friday evening.
The Cavaliers (23-1 overall), who earned Calvert County’s first-ever basketball championship a year ago, will face Patterson Mill of Harford County, the representative from the East, in the state semifinals at 3 p.m. Friday at the University of Maryland Baltimore County’s RAC Arena in Baltimore.
West champion Century of Carroll County will battle North champion Owings Mills of Baltimore County on the other side of the bracket. The championship is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.
“We were very fortunate because it’s a great win for our team and against a great Glenelg team,” Calvert head coach Frank Moore said. “Heck, they haven’t lost very many the last three years. We’ve got a heck of a region; we’re the second seed and we lost one game. They had a heck of a year and we’ve had a heck of a year."
Calvert once again faced its perennial rival in the regional final and the Gladiators (25-2) held a 12-8 lead late in the first quarter.
But the Cavaliers rallied with a 12-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters.
Jasmine Weems began the run with a three-pointer with 24 seconds left in the opening period and Alexis Smith scored six points, while Daijah Thomas added three points and the Cavaliers never trailed again.
“I can't take nothing away from them, they're a good team,” said Thomas, who scored a game-high 21 points, “but when we work together, we can be very good.”
Calvert held a 42-38 lead midway through the third quarter but promptly embarked on an 11-3 run that all but put the game away. The Cavaliers stymied any hopes of a potential comeback by hitting 10 of 13 from the free-throw line down the stretch.
Emily Russo scored a team-high 20 points for Glenelg, which also connected on six three-pointers.
“I feel good tonight that they beat us,” Glenelg head coach Don Beall said, “and we didn’t beat ourselves.”
