Bob Schaller, director of the St. Mary’s County Department of Economic and Community Development, offered his resignation Wednesday.
Schaller has had the job since July 2, 2007. His resignation will be effective as of June 6, he said Thursday.
Asked if he resigned, Schaller said, “Yes, I did. This happened yesterday. I’m seeking other opportunities now.”
Department heads now work at the will of the county commissioners and no longer have employment contracts. The board has to give directors 90 days’ notice of termination.
“I will love this job until I walk out the door,” Schaller said.
His annual salary is $102,000.
“The man turned in his resignation yesterday and I wish him very well,” said Commission President Jack Russell (D). “He did a lot of stuff in the county.”
Asked if the board pressured Schaller to resign, Russell said, “Bob Schaller resigned. That’s it.”
