Mary Estelle DeMarr, 83, White Plains

Mary Estelle DeMarr, 83, of White Plains died April 2, 2012, at home.

Born July 25, 1928, in White Plains, she was the daughter of the late Philip Warren Richards and the late Hazel Berry Willett Richards. Her forebears lived in and near Charles County for hundreds of years.

After graduating from La Plata High School in 1947, she worked for a local engineering firm, then at the Navy Yard and then at the Census Bureau. She won many awards for her work for the government.

In 1950, she married George Leroy DeMarr and they lived on his farm in White Plains throughout their 62 years of married life. She enjoyed gardening. She adored her family, and she was generous to them and to her friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Elsie Louise Richards; and grandson, Michael Andrew DeMarr.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, George Leroy DeMarr Jr. and Phyllis Ann Atkinson; grandchildren, George C. DeMarr, Cassie M. DeMarr, Shelby G. DeMarr, Robert W. Atkinson and William L. Atkinson; sisters, Agnes R. Langley, Alice R. Olmsted and Phyllis Regina Grimes; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. April 6 at Huntt Funeral Home, Waldorf, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. April 7. Burial will take place at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf.

Pallbearers will be her son, George L. DeMarr Jr., son-in-law, Dennis M. Atkinson, grandsons, George C. DeMarr, Robert W. Atkinson and William L. Atkinson and nephew, Brian K. Grimes.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
