Accused of taking money, not performing work
By JEFF NEWMANStaff writer
Police have charged two Calvert County building contractors with theft and operating without a license for failing to complete home renovations in Charles County after being paid in advance, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Christopher David Manion, 38, of North Beach and Albert Lester Styles, 48, of Dunkirk were issued summonses in lieu of arrest this month and in February. Similar charges also have been filed against Manion in Calvert County.
In one case, the two men were paid hundreds of thousands of dollars over a two-year period to renovate a La Plata couple’s home but never completed the work. The couple were left without heating for two years and are still unable to use portions of their house, police reported.
Recovered evidence shows Manion and Styles cashed the couple’s checks to buy materials, cabinets and fixtures, but records show the supplies never were delivered to the couple.
In other Charles County cases, the men cashed a $3,400 check but never fixed the roof they were paid to repair and also failed to renovate a bathroom for which they were paid $2,154 in February 2011, police said.
Detectives are investigating numerous other theft complaints regarding D&M Construction.
Any Charles County resident who has done business with the company and believes he has been scammed should call 301-609-6436. Residents in other counties should contact their local law enforcement agencies.
