William Dominic Abell, 99, of Leonardtown died May 2, 2012, surrounded by family at his son’s home in Leonardtown.

Born March 1, 1913, at his parents’ farm on Fairgrounds Road, he was the son of the late George Edgar Abell and Emma Pauline Abell.

He was a retired farmer and carpenter and had resided at his home on Fairgrounds Road since November 1948. He was a lifelong member of Our Lady's Catholic Church at Medley’s Neck.

He was a devoted father and grandfather, and he enjoyed working on his farm and spending time with family and friends. He was a giving person and offered to lend a hand to anyone in need. He also enjoyed telling stories about his younger years.

He married Helen Cecelia Downs on Dec. 26, 1939. She preceded him in death on Jan. 1, 2000.

He is survived by his son, John Douglas Abell of Leonardtown; grandchildren, Paul Christopher Abell of Leonardtown and Angela Michelle Abell (Christopher) of Solomons; sister, Maria Jane Higgs of La Plata. He was preceded in death by brothers, George Donald Abell and Francis Edgar Abell; and sisters, Hilda M. Norris and Mary Louise Proffitt.

The family received friends and prayers were recited May 6 at Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home in Leonardtown. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 7 at Our Ladys Catholic Church at Medley's Neck in Leonardtown, with the Rev. Lawrence Young officiating. Interment took place at the church cemetery. Pallbearers were John Leskinen, Ira J. Coombs Jr., Dee Coombs, Rex Coombs, Leon Higgs and Kenneth Wood.
