An inmate at the Charles County jail in La Plata was charged with intentionally activating a false alarm May 7 after destroying the fire sprinkler head in his cell, causing minor flooding in and around the cell and an estimated $600 in damage, deputy state fire marshals reported.

Marcus O. Butler, 26, was served a criminal summons charging him with activating a false alarm and malicious destruction of property. He faces up to eight years in prison and $7,500 in fines.
