The Charles County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a scam involving a man who called an elderly woman in White Plains and, posing as her grandson, had her wire him $2,300 in purported bail money.
The man called the woman at 11:30 a.m. May 7 claiming to be her grandson and under arrest in New York. He said he needed $2,200 to get out of jail, asked the woman to wire him money and gave her instructions on where to go and how to do it.
The woman went to a local grocery store and wired $2,300 to the caller.
Later that day, the woman called her grandson, who said he was in Texas and had never been arrested.
Officer D.E. Ruby is investigating.
