Garland Edgar Smythers, 94, Morriston, Fla.

Garland Edgar “Garl” Smythers, 94, of Morriston, Fla., formerly of La Plata, died May 12, 2012, at home.

Born Feb. 18, 1918, in Carroll, Va., he was the son of the late James W. Smythers and the late Lela V. Caudel Smythers.

Mr. Smythers was a carpenter superintendent with the Carpenters’ Union and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was very family-oriented and enjoyed spending time with all family members and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Jean Smythers; and son, Barry D. Smythers Sr.

He is survived by his daughter, Robin Joy and her husband, Jimmy Golden of Morriston; daughter-in-law, Susan Smythers of La Plata; grandchildren, Wes, Barry Jr., Samantha and Jimmy; and great-grandchildren, Alex, Brad and Brianna.

Visitation will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. May 19 at Raymond Funeral Service, La Plata, followed by graveside service and burial at noon at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf.

Arrangements are being handled by Raymond Funeral Service.
