George Henry Snellings III, 79, of Charlotte Hall died May 19, 2012, at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, with his family at his side.
Born March 28, 1933, in Richmond, Va., he was the son of George Henry Snellings Jr. and Anita Agnes Lel Snellings.
He retired from the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C. He was a veteran of the Korean War and earned multiple medals, including the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal.
He was a scuba-diving rescue volunteer and instructor. He enjoyed horseback riding, swimming, flying gliders and was an automobile enthusiast. He was a member of the American Legion Post 238, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 15, Knights of Columbus Council 10246 and the St. Charles Sportsman’s Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Eugene Lee Snellings; and children, Pat A. Snellings Sr. and Matthew B. Snellings.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Femiano Snellings, whom he married on Sept. 17, 1955, in Washington, D.C.; his children, George M. Snellings (Michelle) of Helen, David A. Snellings Sr. (Catherine) of Waldorf, Mark A. Snellings (Kathleen) of Pomfret, Wanda M. Hoover (Craig) of Mechanicsville and Victoria L. “Vicky” Hoover (Douglas) of Mechanicsville; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday, May 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home in Charlotte Hall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, May 25, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bryantown. The Rev. Rory T. Conley will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Pat Snellings Jr., Justin Snellings, Tim Myett, David Snellilngs Jr., Doug Hoover Jr. and Benjamin Snellings.
