It saddens me to see Bill Chambers name tarnished by a report critical of spending decisions he made as the manager of Show Place Arena, many of those expenditures related to the United Way of Calvert County, headed by his wife, Kelly.
Everyone working to improve this county knows Bill. They know him to be a man who has give his time and effort to a wide range of civic and charitable endeavors year after year. He constantly gives himself and, for that reason, is among the most respected among us. When awards are given for civic-mindedness, you can be certain Bill will at least be nominated. He should hold his head high.
None of this is to excuse questionable expenditures by someone in the public trust. But, keep in mind, that if Bill crossed a line it, was not for personal gain. He may have gone too far in helping United Way, but if some day my name is associated with impropriety on the front page of the paper, I hope that it is for being over-zealous in helping a charitable organization.
