Susan Elizabeth Keusal, 74, formerly of Gaithersburg, died June 2, 2012, at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, N.C.

Born May 16, 1938, in Kewanee, Ill., to the late Walter and Shirley Shilgalis, she is survived by her husband of 53 years, Dan Keusal.

She graduated from Kewanee High School in 1956 and went on to attend Illinois State Normal University and the University of Illinois. Keusal was a founder and board member of the Shady Grove Pregnancy Center for 16 years. Her family lived in Gaithersburg from 1965 until 2002.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by five children, Dan Keusal, Jr., of Seattle, Wash., Andy Keusal and wife Kirsten of Orient, Ohio, Amy Girardot and husband John of Geneva, Ill., Jennifer Borda and husband Bill of Charlotte, N.C., and Sarah Bielecki and husband Scott of Cumberland, R.I.; two brothers, Tom Shilgalis of Normal, Ill., and John Shilgalis of Longmont, Colo.; and 17 grandchildren.

The funeral mass took place June 5 at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28211. Heritage Funeral Home in Matthews, N.C., handled the arrangements.
