A man and a woman riding a motorcycle died in a collision Monday night on Route 4 just south of the bridge to Solomons.

Michael Allan Heller, 37, of Lusby was driving a 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle with passenger Holly Hope Fulwood, 32, also of Lusby at about 11:10 p.m. heading south on Route 4 near Kingston Creek Road coming from Calvert County, according to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.

The motorcycle was followed by a 2003 Ford Taurus driven by Richard Kenneth Cornelison, 27, of Lusby when it approached a Jeep Cherokee driven by Jacklyn Marie Cox, 21, with passenger Katelyn Ruth Wilt, 21, both of St. Leonard.

According to a St. Mary’s sheriff’s press release, Heller applied the brakes of his motorcycle but collided with the rear of the Jeep. Both occupants of the motorcycle were ejected and the Jeep skidded sideways. Cornelison swerved the Ford Taurus to avoid the motorcycle and collided with the Jeep.

Members of the sheriff's office crash reconstruction team are investigating the accident; speed and alcohol are being investigated as contributing factors to the collision, according to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.

“One or both of those may be a factor” in the collision, Deputy Cindy Allen, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said Tuesday. She said that a toxology report will likely be done on the driver of the motorcycle.

Allen said that no one had been charged as of Tuesday morning.

She would not comment any more on the case, which she said is still under investigation.

Heller was pronounced dead at the scene; Fulwood was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital where she died from her injuries.

The drivers and occupants of the other vehicles were taken to area hospitals where they were treated and released.

Cox’s mother, Darlene Stone, said Tuesday morning that her daughter was at home recovering after the accident. She said that her daughter and friend were going to St. Mary’s to get a bite to eat when the motorcycle approached her quickly from behind and ran into the back of the Jeep.

“The motorcycle hit the back of the Jeep and it spun around,” and was then sideswiped by the Ford Taurus, Stone said.
