Police found someone with severe burns on his back Tuesday as they responded to an assault call off Route 5 in St. Inigoes, and they report that he suffered the injuries when he was knocked into a campfire, held down and kicked during a dispute with two men.
Two suspects were charged Wednesday with first-degree assault through the investigation by St. Mary’s sheriff’s deputies. Charles B. Jones, 48, of Mechanicsville was jailed without bond. A court commissioner ordered that Joshua Joseph Yates, 23, of St. Inigoes be held in lieu of $5,000 bond on the assault charge, online court records state, and Yates was held without bond on a charge of violating his probation from his guilty plea last year to a theft charge.
Sheriff’s deputies report that an ambulance crew took the injured person to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown.
