A pedestrian illegally in the roadway was struck and killed at 1:32 a.m. Sunday on U.S. 301 near Balsam Run in Bel Alton, the Maryland State Police La Plata barrack reported.

Police said a 2008 Chrysler Town and County was traveling north on U.S. 301 when it struck a man walking in the road.

The man was identified as Charles Lester S. Matthews, 33, of Upper Marlboro.

He was pronounced dead on the scene, and his body was taken to the State Medical Examiners Office in Baltimore, according to a report by trooper J. Edelen.
