A U.S. Navy lieutenant commander died after a two-vehicle collision Saturday night at a California intersection, police report, in a crash that also seriously injured his wife and daughter.

Keith Raymond Hanson, 39, of Frisco, Texas, was visiting St. Mary’s last week when he drove a rental car onto Route 235 from a shopping center, into the path of a southbound sport utility vehicle driven by 39-year-old Randy Phillip Whiten of Mechanicsville, St. Mary’s sheriff’s deputies report from their preliminary investigation. Hanson died Sunday at a hospital, and 39-year-old Jennifer Dorr Hanson and 8-year-old Hannah MacKenzie Hanson were released from other hospitals this week.

Keith Hanson had a green traffic light facing him when he began driving the rented sedan across the highway’s southbound lanes to turn north, and the sheriff’s office reports that the SUV’s traveling through a red light was a contributing circumstance in the accident, along with possible driver fatigue affecting its operator. He declined to be taken to a hospital after the accident.

There was no evidence of alcohol or other drugs in the crash, according to the sheriff’s office.

Keith Hanson, formerly assigned to a squadron at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, was transferred to a facility in Frisco, a suburb of Dallas, about two years ago, the sheriff’s office reports, and the family was in St. Mary’s last week to do some work on the house they still own in Hollywood.
