An Indian Head teenager died Tuesday at a Washington, D.C., hospital from injuries she suffered the previous evening after crashing into Charles County’s brick welcome sign on Indian Head Highway in Accokeek, police reported.

Bria Monyae Warren, 19, was driving south on the highway at 6:38 p.m. Monday when she lost control of her 2001 Volvo and slammed head-on into the sign, Charles County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Diane Richardson said.

Sgt. R. Kiesel discovered the wreck and, realizing Warren was trapped inside the car, notified emergency medical personnel.

Warren had to be extricated from the car and was flown via Maryland State Police helicopter to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.,, where she was listed in critical condition, Richardson said.

Warren died at the hospital Tuesday, Richardson said.

Officer W. Saunders of the department’s traffic operations unit is investigating the fatal accident, the eighth in Charles County this year and the fourth in the last few weeks.

Charles Lester S. Matthews, 33, of Upper Marlboro was walking on U.S. 301 early Sunday morning when he was struck and killed by a northbound minivan.

Seven-year-old Ja'Nae Alicia Woodard of Waldorf was killed June 24 in a three-car crash on Indian Head Highway in Bryans Road. Her mother, Marquetta Rochelle McGee, 36, died Thursday after spending the week in critical condition at Prince George's County Hospital Center in Cheverly.

Lana Elaine Mostardi, 30, of Waldorf was attempting to cross Chicamuxen Road in Marbury the night of June 18 when she was hit and killed by a passing SUV.
