A 19-year-old man is in stable condition after being shot in the face Saturday morning at a house party in Waldorf.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a shooting in the 4900 block of Derryfield Court in Waldorf at 1:40 a.m., spokeswoman Diane Richardson said.

Police learned that someone pulled out a handgun during an argument between two groups of people at the party and fired multiple shots, one of which hit the man in the face.

His friends took the man to Civista Medical Center in La Plata, from where he was later flown to another hospital, Richardson said.

Investigators had not identified the shooter as of Tuesday afternoon but are working leads, she added.

The circumstances are similar to those of another Saturday morning incident that led to the death of an 18-year-old Cheltenham man.

Jerry Adam Gilchrist was pronounced dead at Civista after suffering apparent blunt force trauma in a fight at a party in Indian Head.

Police received reports of gunshots at that party as well, but no shooting victims were found. Officers on the scene also learned there had been several fights at the party.

Richardson said that word of both parties spread via social media and that at each there were a number of “unexpected or uninvited guests that showed up, and we think that’s where the trouble started.”
