A firefighter works quickly Thursday afternoon to douse flames in a vacant field and forest area amid severe heat near Leonardtown, at a location off St. Andrew’s Church Road that brought out about 60 firefighters from throughout St. Mary’s, Patuxent River Naval Air Station and from Charles and Calvert counties. A St. Mary’s dispatch log report states that the fire eventually spread through 7 acres and kept firefighters working from 4 p.m. until 10:30 that night. An online report by Leonardtown volunteer firefighters states that the accidental fire’s cause was attributed to a vehicle spinning doughnut patterns in the field. In addition, Ridge, Webster Field and Bay District firefighters were on the scene about four hours Friday at a woods fire along Demko Road near Dameron. State forestry crews also responded to both fires.
