Prince George’s County schools’ chief of human resources notified the school system that she would resign, school officials said, leaving another gap in leadership in the school district.

Synthia Shilling, who has been an employee with the school system since 2006, first as an attorney and later as human resources chief, will resign effective Aug. 15, school spokesman Briant Coleman said.

As chief of human resources, Shilling was responsible for staffing, recruitment and managing employee performance.

“It was a personal decision,” Coleman said. “She had indicated earlier this year, in March, that she wanted to transition out of her position of chief of human resources.”

Coleman declined to comment on the trial.

Shilling is facing a trial Aug. 27 for an incident in Anne Arundel County on May 19.

Shilling, who also goes by her married name Synthia Kucner, faces six charges stemming from the incident, including failure to stop after causing unattended property damage and reckless driving, according to court records.

Her resignation comes as the school board prepares to find a replacement for Superintendent William R. Hite Jr. — who will leave the county Sept. 30 to become the head of the School District of Philadelphia. Hite’s deputy, Bonita Coleman-Potter, left the county July 1 to take over a school district in Mississippi.

In 2008, Shilling paid a $442 fine for second-degree assault against a Maryland State Police officer, according to court records, and received 18 months of probation before judgment.
