A different day produced different results for the Francis Scott Key Post 11 and Severna Park Post 175 baseball teams Wednesday morning.

Post 175, the Anne Arundel County District champions, had a 3-1 lead against Post 11 on Tuesday night when their first-round game in the Maryland American Legion Baseball Tournament was suspended due to lightning at McCurdy Field in Frederick.

But not long after play resumed early Wednesday morning, Post 11 grabbed a 4-3 lead with three runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run double by Ian Foland and then a run-scoring triple by Matt Shook.

FSK added two more in the fifth on a RBI hits by Brian Smith and Michael Omelchenko for a 6-3 lead and went on to a 7-4 victory. Post 11 was scheduled to play again Wednesday night against Calvert County, but more delays during the day Wednesday pushed that game to a 9 a.m. start on Thursday. With a win Thursday morning, Post 11 will play again at 7 p.m. Thursday. A loss would drop the team into an elimination game at 4 p.m. Thursday. The double-elimination tournament continues through Saturday at McCurdy Field.

“You could see last night that they were disappointed being down 3-1,” said Post 11 manager Tom Long. “They just looked ready at 7:30 [a.m.] this morning. They had a great frame of mind. They were very loose and ready to go.”

Post 175 cut the deficit to 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth. Sam Lewis doubled, reached third on a wild pitch and then scored as Omelchenko, Post 11's catcher, attempted to throw him out at third base. FSK responded with a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by C.J. Winpigler with two out.

“Last night, we didn't really come out like we should have,” said Shook, who combined with Foland for five hits, three RBI, two doubles and a triple from the eighth and ninth holes in the lineup. “We just thought, 'This is a new day.' We worked on keeping our hands inside the ball.”

Severna Park jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Tuesday night on a run-scoring, bases-loaded groundout by Tom Weyand and a two-run error in right field on a long fly ball off the bat of Matt Ferrara.

Post 11 trimmed the lead to 3-1 in the top of second inning on an error by Post 175 while attempting to turn a double play. The relay to first base went wide, allowing Omelchenko to score from second base. The contest, which started more than 90 minutes late because of lightning and rain delays in game before it, was halted with two out in the bottom of the second because of lightning.

“I couldn't get my off-speed over,” said Post 175 pitcher Rhyan Karr, who went the distance on the mound. “They're a good hitting team. If you can only throw fastballs, they're going to find a way to hit it.”

Taylor Hyssong also threw all nine innings for Frederick, allowing one earned run with 11 strikeouts.
