Shockers tryouts

The Southern Maryland Shockers fastpitch travel teams will hold tryouts for the fall and spring seasons.

Tryouts will occur for the 10-U team at 11 a.m. Aug. 18 and 6 p.m. Aug. 22 at Benedict field and for the 12-U team from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 25 at Benedict field.

Sports injury clinic

Capital Area Orthopedic Associates, Safe Kids USA and DePuy Mitek J&J will present a youth sports injury prevention clinic at 4 p.m. Aug. 18 at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf.

The clinic will occur before the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs take on Sugar Land at 6:35 p.m. All attendees receive game tickets and a pregame picnic.

United Way Golf Classic

Teams are now forming for the United Way of Calvert County Golf Classic.

The event will start at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 20 at the Twin Shields Golf Club in Dunkirk, featuring a catered luncheon and beer tasting; contest holes like long drive, closest to the pin and hole-in-one, a putting contest; and a golfer goodie bag.

Soccer camp series

Gretton Goalkeeping will offer its 10th annual summer goalkeeper soccer camp series through the week of Aug. 20 at various locations in Southern Maryland. Camps will run four days each week at various hours of the day.

All ages and skill levels are welcome. Field player training offered as well by separate field player instructor.

Kickball tournament

The Community Foundation of Charles County will hold its second annual Community Kickball Tournament on Aug. 25 at Hallowing Point Park in Prince Frederick.

The tournament, which will be round-robin followed by a playoff, begins at 9 a.m. Registration is at 8 a.m.

Teams are made up of 10 players 10 and older with a mixture of males and females. Each team is guaranteed two games.

Tennis tournament

The St. Mary's County Tennis Association will be hold its sixth annual Quasi-Compass Rose Doubles Tournament from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 25 at George B. Cecil Park in Valley Lee. The raindate is Aug. 26.

The first eight men’s doubles and the first eight women’s doubles teams to register will be accepted into the tournament for ages ranging from high school to adult. Each doubles team will play three eight-game prosets and winners will progress through the brackets.

SMCTA Open

The St. Mary’s County Tennis Association Open Tennis Tournament will be held at George B. Cecil Park in Valley Lee on Sept. 1 to 3.

The events will be men and women's singles, men and women's doubles and mixed doubles in the Open Division (4.0 players and above) and the B Division (3.0 to 3.5 players).

Race to the Creek

The Race to the Creek, a 5K run and walk to benefit Patuxent High School’s track and field program, will be held at 8 a.m. Sept. 8 at the school. All registered runners receive a T-shirt and there will be several age group awards.

Benefit golf tournament planned

Bay Community Support Services will hold a benefit golf tournament Sept. 14 at the Compass Pointe Golf Links in Pasadena to benefit people with disabilities in Maryland.

The tournament has been BAY-CSS’ largest fundraiser every year since its inception in 2006 when the agency was known as United Cerebral Palsy of Southern Maryland.

The course is at 9010 Fort Smallwood Road. Registration begins at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Go to www.baycss.org/golf.html for more information and to register.

Gretton Goalkeeping will offer a three-part coaches course focused on reinforcing proper skills and techniques for those adults who are in the need of learning the basics to pass onto their child or players during games and practices.

The course will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on various Saturdays during the summer in La Plata. Sessions can be attended individually or attend all three for a discounted rate.
