Former county health officer Chinnadurai Devadason, who retired in June due to ill health, died Aug. 15. He was 72.

Charles County Department of Health spokesman William Leebel confirmed Devadason’s passing in a phone interview today.

Known as “Dr. D,” Devadason served as the county’s health officer from 1983 to 1988 and again from October 1995 to June 2012.

A statement sent today to the Maryland Independent from the health department states that Devadason died in Vellore, India, with his wife, Ann, at his side.

“Dr. Devadason leaves a legacy of dedicated public health service which advanced the health of the citizens of Charles County. He will be greatly missed,” the release states.

Devadason is survived by his wife, who lives in Annapolis, and three sons.
