Helicopters flying over a La Plata neighborhood Wednesday were searching for two missing boys.

At 4 p.m., the La Plata Town Police responded to the 1,000 block of Norfolk Drive in Kings Grant for the report of a missing 12-year-old.

Lt. Wayne Wathen said officers were informed that the boy and another friend had possibly gone into a wooded area behind the subdivision.

The boy had been missing two hours when the report came in.

The boy’s friend was later reported missing after his parents learned he did not show up for football practice.

Wathen said the La Plata Town Police called for a Maryland State Police helicopter to assist in searching the wooded area. Along with the helicopter, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office sent members of the K-9 unit and officers with ATVs. Friends of the family and Bay K-9 Search and Recovery also responded.

At 6:45 p.m. the boys were found on Route 488 near Piney Church Road. Wathen said they got lost in the woods and followed the power lines to the road.

No injuries were reported.
