Leonardtown 2, Chopticon 0

The Raiders won its fourth-straight contest in as many games with Wednesday’s victory over the Braves.

Abby Finkelston helped lead the way with a hand in both Leonardtown goals, scoring an unassisted goal and assisting on an Autumn Mallory goal.

“Chopticon played us very hard and we had to fight until the very end,” Leonardtown head coach Mia Finkelston said. “Whenever these two teams get together, the game is played with a lot of grit. The girls know each other and it can be very emotional for them, too.”

Finkelston added that despite having 10 penalty corners in the win, no goals were scored from them.

The win also improved Leonardtown to 2-0 in SMAC. Chopticon fell to 2-2, 2-2.

Volleyball

Ryken 3, St. John’s (D.C.) 1

The Knights under first-year head coach Tracey Jubeck improved to 3-0 overall on the season (2-0 WCAC) with its victory over St. John’s (D.C.) on Wednesday night.

After falling behind one game to none, Jubeck watched as her Knights won the next three, 25-21, 25-20, 26-24.

“The girls are playing extremely competitive volleyball this season and have a tremendous drive to do whatever it takes to win,” Jubeck said. “St. Johns is a very talented, well coached WCAC team, so last night was a great win for us and a result of a solid team effort.”

Jordan Auginbaugh led the way for the Knights with 14 kills. Rachel Heinze added eight kills and Cydney Smith added five in the win.

Smith also added four blocks and Chandler Smith added two blocks as the two have been vital in the success this season.

“Cydney and Chandler continue to have very effective net play in the middle and Rachel continues to be a focused leader on the court for the team,” Jubeck added.

The Knights started the campaign on Sept. 4 with a five-game victory over Leonardtown.

Cross country

Raiders boys, girls sweep

Leonardtown improved to 4-0 overall and in SMAC on the season with a sweep Wednesday afternoon over the Patuxent Panthers and hosting Huntingtown Hurricanes, 21-40 over Huntingtown and 27-32 over Patuxent.

Senior Rachel LaBatt led the way for the Raiders with her second-place finish in 22 minutes 41 seconds.

Sam Zarzaca (23:26) placed fourth overall, Maggie Nantz placed eighth overall in 24:21, while Dianna Aud was ninth (24:34) and Hannah Sweet rounded out the Raiders top-10 finishes with her 10th-place finish in 24:39.

The Leonardtown boys team followed suit in sweeping the meet, 23-32 over Huntingtown and 24-37 over Patuxent to improve to 3-1, 3-1 this season.

Ryan Ligon placed second overall on the boys side in 19:20.

Raiders runners finished sixth through ninth with Harrison Even, Miles Mertz, Spencer Erickson and Stephen Henkel, respectively.
