Charles County is among the richest counties in the United States, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics.

In 2011, the county had a median household income of $91,733, a rise of $4,726 from 2010, according to the American Community Survey, which is conducted annually.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that Charles County ranked 11th highest in the country, up from 15th last year. The Census Bureau does not supply ranked data on county household incomes.

Kwasi Holman, director of economic development for Charles County, said the ranking shows that “the county is continuing to grow especially with highly educated people who are moving in.”

“Charles County is a beautiful place to live with a very fine school system and access to the metropolitan area. As that access improves the trend will continue,” he said.

Charles County Chamber of Commerce President Carlos Montague said of being ranked 11th, “It’s fantastic.”

He said the chamber would like to see Charles County place in the top 10 and hopes that the next round of data will “reflect more of the median income actually coming from within the county.”

Montague said many Charles County residents, “live here, they shop here but they work elsewhere.”

Holman, said the county is working hard to first retain businesses that are already in the county, and then attract new businesses “that can benefit from the many amenities that the county has to offer.”

According to The Post’s top 100 list, St. Mary’s County dipped from being ranked 14th to 33rd with a median income of $81,675 and Calvert County’s median income of $89,393 was 16th, down three from last year.

The national median income in 2011 was $50,502, down from $51,144 in 2010, according to a report from the Census Buereau website.

In August, CNN Money, an online magazine, ranked Waldorf 20th on its list of the 100 best small cities to live in in the country.
