Johnson completes Air Force training
U.S. Air Force Airman Devon N. Johnson graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
He is the son of Prentice Johnson of Kensington and Victoria Johnson of Bryans Road.
He is a 2011 graduate of Henry E. Lackey High School.
Monk deployed to Afghanistan
U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Kristopher A. Monk, son of Gail R. and Issac W. Monk of Cheltenham, assigned to Heavy Helicopter Squadron 362 homeported at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii is currently forward-deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
Monk along with fellow Marines conducted the final flight of the CH-53D heavy lift helicopter.
The squadron, known as the “Ugly Angels,” has used the D model since 1969.
The D model was introduced during the Vietnam War and was designed to carry cargo, vehicles, artillery and troops operating in naval environments.
The need for greater carrying capacity forced the development of the E model
The E model, a faster and more powerful make, first entered service in the 1980's and will replace the Vietnam-era aircraft.
Upon completion of their fourth deployment to Afghanistan, the squadron will be deactivated after 60 years of service.
In addition to seven years duty in Vietnam, the squadron has been deployed to Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Storm (the first Gulf War) and twice to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Monk is a 2002 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School in Upper Marlboro and joined the Marine Corps in September 2004.
Portillo completes Air Force training
U.S. Air Force Reserve Airman Rosa I. Portillo graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
Portillo is the daughter of Noemy Portillo and Hugo Pacheco of Chantilly, Va.
She is a 2005 graduate of Westlake High School.
Dawson graduates basic training
U.S. Army Reserve Pvt. Emmanuel Dawson has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.
Dawson is the grandson of Yvonne and Narvell Robison of Pomfret.
He is a 2011 graduate of North Point High School.
