A Bel Alton man was struck and killed by a car Wednesday afternoon while attempting to cross northbound U.S. 301 from the median just south of the highway’s intersection with Faulkner Road in Bel Alton, the Maryland State Police reported.

Christopher Andamo Pettis, 52, walked into the path of an oncoming 2006 Honda Accord at 1:33 p.m., police said.

The collision severed Pettis’ left leg just below the knee and sent him crashing through the car’s windshield and into the passenger seat, according to a news release from the La Plata barrack.

The driver, Sarah Rebecca Osborne, 27, of Faulkner was taken by ambulance to Civista Medical Center in La Plata, where she was treated for minor injuries.

Pettis’ body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autospy.
