Panthers football remains unbeaten

Special to The Recorder
Friday night, Patuxent rolled into La Plata High School with an undefeated record.
It left La Plata with one more win added to that mark in a 45-7 victory.
Keying the victory for the Panthers (5-0, 3-0 SMAC) was their running game as seven different rushers found the stat sheet as the team totaled 407 yards on the ground. Rafiq Douglas and Trey Lee both broke 100 yards rushing on the night.
As for the passing attack, Patuxent didn’t focus on throwing the ball too much as Lee and Tyler Crounse attempted only five combined passes on the night and completed three of them for 64 yards.
It was a rough night for La Plata’s offense because of Patuxent’s defense. The Warriors (1-4, 0-3), however, didn’t get shut down completely as they managed to score a touchdown off of Jacob Fitch’s 18-yard run. Fitch ended the night with a total of 134 yards on 28 carries.
La Plata’s offense also attacked a lot on the ground by finishing with 173 rushing yards off 45 carries. Through the air, quarterback Alex Calvert was 1 of 6 passing for only 24 yards.
The Patuxent defense only allowed the one touchdown on the night, which was in the first quarter, and kept La Plata’s offense scoreless after that.
Linebacker James Hall and defensive lineman Travis Weldon both led the Panthers defensively with five tackles and five assists on the night. Other big performers were Mike Henry with seven, Joey Parsons with five, James Lee with eight and Douglas with eight.
Patuxent will look to keep its undefeated record intact as it hosts Great Mills at 7 p.m. Friday. La Plata, which continues to look for its first SMAC win, will be at Westlake at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Panthers are one of three SMAC teams still unbeaten. The others are Huntingtown (5-0, 4-0) and McDonough (5-0, 4-0).
