The name might be changing, but the ways to donate are not.

Community Foundation of Charles County Executive Director Gretchen Heinze Hardman announced that at its annual Philanthropy Day luncheon in November, the foundation will make its debut as the Community Foundation of Southern Maryland.

The CFCC manages 15 funds worth more than $1 million. As the organization grows and reaches out to those in Calvert and St. Mary’s counties, Hardman said its mission will remain the same.

“It’s the same organization as always, just now with a broader reach,” she said. “Donors can be as specific as they want with their money and where it goes ... it’s up to them.”

Kevin Wedding, former foundation board chairman, said the idea to shift the group’s focus had been in the works for years, despite only recently being finalized.

“The board of directors ... approved to change the name to the Community Foundation of Southern Maryland Inc., in order to offer folks from the entire region the same opportunities the citizens of Charles County have been afforded,” Wedding said in the release.

Ellen Flowers-Fields, current board chairwoman, mirrored Wedding’s sentiments.

“Our region’s continued growth and economic success has always been as a result of the shared vision and collaborative work of our counties. The board of directors wants to further engage our citizens, nonprofit organizations and businesses in this legacy of success through philanthropic and cause-related giving that supports the quality of life desired in our region now and into the future,” she said.

In addition to the name change, November’s luncheon will offer another small twist: Hardman said the foundation has opted for a tribute show to the late chef Julia Child.

“We opted out of the usual keynote speaker and decided to provide something more entertaining,” Hardman said. “Because this is falling the Friday before Election Day, we wanted to do something lighthearted for our guests. We thought it’d be a great way to entertain the philanthropists who we’re honoring.”
