St. Mary’s sheriff’s deputies advised this week that a citizen recently reported receiving a call from someone who claimed to be a “Microsoft Windows” representative and instructed her to turn on her computer so he could “fix” its problems, but she chose instead to call the police.

The sheriff’s office forwarded FBI recommendations that computer users keep their equipment’s firewall protections turned on, install or update antivirus software, install or update anti-spyware technology, keep operating systems up to date, be careful about downloading email attachments and turn off the computer when it’s not in use.
