John Wesley Claggett, 84, of Owings died Sept. 10, 2012, at Burnett-Calvert Hospice House in Prince Frederick.
He was born Oct. 8, 1927, in North Beach to the late William and Sarah Claggett.
He received his education at Mt. Hope School and W.S. Brooks High School. In 1954, he married Alberta B. Umstead and remained married until her death in 1980. They had five daughters. In 1983, he married Phillis E. Titus, and they were married until his death. He was a man of many trades, including cab driver, tractor trailer driver, exterminator, RC Masonry and owner and operator of JC Trucking, but his first love was his family. His priority in life was providing for and taking care of his wife and children. He sacrificed many of his own dreams to help family, friends, neighbors and even strangers when needed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Sarah Claggett; first wife, Alberta B. Umstead Claggett; daughter, Vertina Joyce Umstead; brother-in-law, Roy; and sister, Martha Claggett Randall.
He is survived by his wife, Phillis E.Claggett; children, Lorraine Claggett of Baltimore, Marc Van “Larry” Claggett and his wife, Yolanda, of Baltimore, Michael T. Claggett and his wife, Velma, of St. Leonard, Johnnie Mae Gorman and her husband, Warren, of Owings, Carla Faye Hall, Lisa Marie Claggett of Fayetteville, N.C., and Rita Ann Green and her husband, Furnie, of Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany; step-daughters, Delita White and her husband, Robert, of Prince Frederick and Renee Titus of Chesapeake Beach; stepson, Wayne Titus of Denver, Col.; grandchildren, Yolanda, Tanya, Louis Jr., Roderick, Tamar, Krystal, Tiffany, Marc, Michael, Marcia, Jon, Alexis, Amaya, Larrine, Donnett, Tavares, Eric, Delontae, Shaquette, Shanika, Warren Jr., Yvonne, Brandon, Diana, Darien, Robert Jr., Destiny, Corey, Lanika, Kavona, Sterling Jr.; 40 great-grandchildren; brother, James Claggett and his wife, Dorothy, of Huntingtown; sisters, Mary Claggett Downs of Baltimore, Mable King of Washington, D.C., Alice Austin of Owings; brothers-in-law, Albert Umstead Jr. of Durham, N.C., John Titus and his wife, Helen, of Chesapeake Beach, Ronald Titus and his wife, Joan, of Chesapeake Beach, Larry Titus and his wife, Sharon, of Prince Frederick; mother-in-law, Eloise Titus; sister-in-law, Dorothy Campbell and her husband, Robert; nephew, Eugene “Gee Gee” Claggett; special friends, Wilbert and Mary Booth, James Jones, Kim, Harry and Chris Hill, Mr. Winbourn and Leon Rice; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held Sept. 17 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Huntingtown, with the Rev. Joan Jones officiating.
Interment was at Mt. Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery in Sunderland.
Pallbearers were Tavares Claggett, Brandon Hall, Warren Gorman Jr., Eric Claggett, Delontae Claggett, Louis Brown Jr. and Darien Green.
Honorary pallbearers were Eugene Claggett, James Claggett Jr., Clifton Claggett and Melvin Claggett.
