Receives four-year jail sentence
By KATIE FITZPATRICK
A Port Republic man was sentenced Friday to four years in jail in Calvert County Circuit Court after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting girls at a Walmart and at an unspecified grocery store in Prince Frederick earlier this year.
David Alan Dobbs, 54, was indicted in May under two separate indictments. In the first indictment, Dobbs was charged with third-degree sex offense, fourth-degree sex offense and second-degree assault for events that occurred Jan. 6.
He pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree sex offense Friday, for which he was sentenced to five years in prison, with all but two years suspended, to be served consecutive to a one-year jail sentence he received in St. Mary’s County for similar charges.
In the second indictment, Dobbs was charged with two counts of third-degree sex offense, fourth-degree sex offense and second-degree assault for events that occurred April 6.
Dobbs pleaded guilty Friday to one count of third-degree sex offense under this indictment, for which he received a sentence of five years in prison, with all but two years suspended, to be served consecutively to his other sentences.
He was placed on five years of supervised probation in each case, both to be served concurrently with the five-year probation he received in St. Mary’s County.
Dobbs was originally arrested April 12 after an investigation began when he reportedly groped a 13-year-old girl inside a Walmart in St. Mary’s County several days earlier.
A 13-year-old girl told St. Mary’s detectives that she was reaching to get some eggs at the Walmart when “she felt someone breathing on her neck,” court papers state. The girl said she turned and saw a man standing behind her. He handed her a carton of eggs before he began groping her from behind, detectives said. Surveillance video shows the man and girl were in the store at the same time and the man making a purchase with a credit card issued to Dobbs.
The store’s staff told the detective that they were aware of another April 4 incident at their store and one on April 6 at the Walmart store in Prince Frederick involving other girls and a man of the same description.
Dobbs also was indicted in St. Mary’s County on charges of third-degree sex offense, second-degree assault and fourth-degree sex offense, according to online records. On Sept. 21, Dobbs was sentenced in St. Mary’s County Circuit Court to two years in jail, with all but one year suspended, after he pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree sex offense.
