U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Kristopher A. Monk, son of Issac W. Monk of Cheltenham, recently was awarded a Certificate of Commendation for outstanding achievement as a flight mechanic with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 362, Marine Aircraft Group 24 at Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii while on deployment.

Monk supervised 23 Marines, leading safe maintenance of 12 CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopters , which resulted in more than 1,000 combat flight hours. He provided the squadron with four Pettibone crane qualifications, filling a critical need during the deployment to Afghanistan. Monk’s leadership was instrumental in the removal and replacement of 40 dynamic aircraft components.

Monk graduated from Frederick Douglass High School in 2002 and joined the Marine Corps in September 2004.
