Huntingtown splits pair

The Hurricanes (7-3, 6-3) added a win and a loss to their record in a three-day homestand.

Against Leonardtown, Phil Brown scored, but the Raiders prevailed 2-1.

Against the rival Cavaliers (2-5-2, 2-5-2), Keith Merriman scored both goals as Huntingtown prevailed 2-1 in overtime.

“I am hoping our team has turned the page from inconsistent to consistent play,” Calvert head coach Doug Jones said. “They played as a team throughout the entire match [and] we lost … but boy did they play well. I couldn't be more proud of them. If they continue to play like this, we will surprise a lot of people.”

Pats, ‘Canes to decide Classic

The Patriot Classic will pit two familiar foes against each other as host Northern will tackle county rival Huntingtown in the title game at noon Saturday.

The Patriots earned their berth with a 4-0 win over Calvert, thanks to Joe Cirillo’s two goals. Sam Collins had one as did Matt Schwartz, who converted on a penalty kick. Goalies Zach Dunn, Nick Dawes and Matt Chow shared the shutout.

Huntingtown advanced after its 2-0 win over Thomas Stone.

Calvert will battle the Cougars in the consolation game at 10 a.m.
