Howard Francis Dorsey Jr., 78, of Annapolis, formerly of California, died Sept. 5, 2012, surrounded by his family.

Born Oct. 11, 1933, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Helen Eleanor Fischer Dorsey and Howard Francis Dorsey Sr.

He was the husband of Alexis Marinoff Dorsey, whom he married on Nov. 22, 1975, in Alexandria, Va. He is survived by his children, Eileen E. Bildman (Steven) of Hollywood, Anita N. Sullivan (Kenny Scully) of La Plata, Howard F. Dorsey III (Antoinette) of California and David A. Dorsey of Annapolis; six grandchildren, Colleen M. Clarke, Richard F. Aud, April N. Ryan, James C. Morgan, Kayla A. Dorsey and Rachel E. Dorsey; and his siblings, Harold F. Dorsey (Diane) of Huddleston, Va., and Stephen M. Dorsey (Joyce) of Pasadena. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Kevin M. Clarke.

He graduated from Calvert Hall High School in Baltimore in 1952 and attended Loyola College in Baltimore. He resided in St. Mary’s County from 1970 to 1986. His career began at Howards Auto Service in Baltimore, a family-owned business until 1969. He joined the Maryland Natural Resources Police, serving from 1969 to 1996 and retiring with rank of sergeant. He was a member of the U.S Army Reserve 464th Transport Command based in Annapolis, and he was a member of the pistol team where he competed in nationals at Camp Perry in 1969 and won small arms competition.

He was a member of the Elks and Moose Lodge in St. Mary’s County. He volunteered for 17 years acquiring more than 3,500 hours with Auxiliary of Anne Arundel Medical Center. He also enjoyed square dancing with Crabtown Squares, Campfire Squares, Spinning Windmills and, previously, Pax Hoedowners. He also enjoyed camping, model boat building, home improvement projects, pistol competitions and boating.

The family received friends and prayers were said Sept. 10 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Annapolis and on Sept. 11 at Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home in Leonardtown, where a funeral service was held Sept. 12 at 10 a.m., with the Rev. John Mattingly officiating. Interment followed at Charles Memorial Gardens in Leonardtown. Pallbearers were Howard F. Dorsey III, David A. Dorsey, Richard F. Aud, Harold F. Dorsey, Stephen Dorsey Sr. and Stephen Dorsey Jr.
