Joseph Aloysius Bankins, 69, Mechanicsville

Joseph Aloysius “Joe Boy” Bankins, 69, of Mechanicsville died Sept. 20, 2012, at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.

Born June 15, 1943, in Oakville, he was the son of the late James Bernard Bankins and the late Annie Elizabeth Young Bankins.

He battled heart disease since 1998.

He was educated at St. Joseph’s Elementary School and Banneker High School. Throughout his life, he was a dedicated Catholic, having served as an altar boy at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Morganza, from the age of 6 through the eighth grade, along with his brother, Bernard.

He was married to Alice Olaine Baker Bankins Aug. 20, 1966. He was a devoted and loving husband for 46 years. The couple had two children and five grandchildren. He was a proud “Pop Pop” to his grandchildren, all of whom meant the world to him.

For most of his career, he worked in construction. He was well known for helping beginners in the trade. He was a member of the Laborers Union Local 832. Later in his career, he worked for nonunion contractors in positions including foreman. He retired in 2003 after continuing complications associated with his heart.

Like his father, he was an avid waterman. He enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and oystering. He loved to brag about catching big fish. He held a fish fry for family and friends for seven consecutive years. He was proud of his oyster stew recipe, which many enjoyed.

He kloved telling jokes and stories. His favorite hobbies were bowling, gardening, watching the Dallas Cowboys, hanging out with his friends and hand dancing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Florine Bankins and Rose Elizabeth Bankins Holly; and brother-in-law, William Thomas.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Alice Olaine Bankins; children, Sonya Antoinette Bankins and Joseph Aloysius and his wife, Zettica Bankins II; grandchildren, Nyla Divine Bankins, Makhi Nhiyir Best, Jahzaria Ayan Bankins, Ryan Sebastian Bankins and Zoie Danae Bankins; siblings, E. Marie and her husband, Edward Kennedy, J. Bernard and his wife, Corrine Bankins, Agnes T. Bankins, Cecilia J. Bankins, Veronica M. Bankins, A. Bernadette Thomas, Gloria J. and her husband, Jerry Fitzgerald, Thomas E. Bankins, J. Monique and her husband, Mark Spencer and Joseph “Jody” and his wife, Linda Bankins; aunts, Mary E. Somerville, Nellie L. Wade, A. Marie Goldring, Victoria Bond and Susie Mae Mason; many nieces and nephews, godchildren and brothers-in-law and sisters in-law; and other relatives.

A life celebration was Sept. 27 at Brinsfield Funeral Home, Leonardtown. Mass of Christian Burial wascelebrated Sept. 28 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Morganza. The Rev. Keith Woods officiated. Burial was at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Helen.

Arrangements were handled by Brinsfield Funeral Home.
