Competitors from across Maryland, including several of the best pitchers in the country, took part in the Maryland State Horseshoe Pitching Championships, sponsored by the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association, on Sept. 1 at Frederickís Maryvale Park.
Fifty-four competitors of all skill levels from preteens to seniors in their 80s competed in the tournament, a round-robin event that was organized based on a percentage of ringers, or when the horseshoe wraps around the stake.
Jerry Harley from Accokeek, was the state horseshoe champion in Class B. He also came in second in the world horseshoe tournament in August in Knoxville, Tenn.
Harley, who also plays in the St. Maryís County menís horseshoe league, started practicing in November of last year for the world tournmaent. He most likely will play in Class A next year and prepare this winter for the state championship to be held in Baltimore next year.
