Transit study meetings set for next week

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation has scheduled a second round of meetings to discuss the preliminary concepts and review of study alternatives for the Countywide Transit Network Study.The first step in the study included outreach via an online survey, which received more than 1,300 responses, and two public meetings in July to gather information on transit usersí goals and objectives and potential transit connections.

The same meeting presentation will be held at two locations, featuring an open house format from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a 20-minute presentation at 7 p.m.

The meetings will be Nov. 13 at Stenwood Elementary School in Vienna and Nov. 15 at Key Middle School in Springfield.

New historic marker installed at Mason District Park

History lovers gathered at Mason District Park to unveil a new Civil War Trail marker on Oct. 20. The new marker is located at Masonís Hill which, according to historians, was used by Confederate Col. J.E.B. Stuart as an outpost for the First Virginia Cavalry in 1861. Later, Capt. Edward Porter Alexander of the Signal Corps established a signal station there and observed Washington, D.C.

The marker is located adjacent to the parking lot for Mason District Park, 6621 Columbia Pike, Annandale.

FCPS reschedules Fairfax school boundary meeting

Fairfax County Public Schools has rescheduled one of the dates for a listening tour that will help determine which schools are included in the scope of study of the upcoming Fairfax High-Lanier Middle School boundary study. The boundary study, which will begin in early 2013, will address current and projected overcrowding in Fairfax High School and Lanier Middle School.

The meetings scheduled for Oct. 29 at Fairfax High School and Oct. 30 at Frost Middle School were canceled due to Hurricane Sandy.

The meeting at Fairfax High School has been rescheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 26.

Citizens who registered for the meeting at Frost Middle School can sign up for the Nov. 12 meeting at Woodson High School or the Nov. 26 meeting at Fairfax High School.
