Officers responding Oct. 16 to a reported burglary in the 2700 block of Stanford Place in Waldorf instead found a deer inside the home frantically trying to escape, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office reported.

A 13-year-old girl called 911 after arriving home from school around 12:28 p.m. and seeing that one of the ground-level windows had been broken. Thinking a burglary had taken place, the girl ran to a neighbor's house.

A police dog team entered the home and searched room to room.

In one of the rooms, the team found a deer ramming its antlers against a sliding glass door in an apparent attempt to escape.

Officers opened the door, and the deer ran off.
